D.L. Mayfield is a writer whose work represents a kind of bracing vulnerability that one so seldom encounters in Christian culture.  In this episode, she joins Joe for a discussion of her provocatively titled publishing debut, Assimilate or Go Home: Notes From a Failed Missionary on Rediscovering Faith.

Through this emotionally rich memoir, she shares her extensive experience working with refugee communities in the United States. D.L. (aka Danielle) and Joe explore a few of the many memorable (and timely) stories, how they inform us as individuals, and how we hope they may influence our culture.

  • We were introduced to D.L. through a blog post that Joe’s wife, Vanessa, forwarded him.  The entry was titled “The Brutally Honest Christmas Card” and offered a magnificently candid acknowledgement of her family’s very difficult year.
  • If you’ve not already done so, get a sneak “peak” of Assimilate or Go Home via our recent audio excerpt: Wade In the Water
  • Not that Stranger Things needs any of our help, but here is the promised link for the Netflix original:
