remedy-driveThere are a number of reasons to consider Remedy Drive’s Commodity is a notable release: it’s the band’s 10th studio album; it is produced by front man David Zach’s brother, Phillip; it was wholly funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign; and – not the least of which – it is a concept album with an anti-human trafficking theme.  With all of these in mind, Commodity is potentially the most ambitious new release in Christian music this year but with plenty of opportunity to land on its face.  We’ve gathered together thoughts from across the landscape of internet music reviews to give you an overall picture.

The Consensus

Taking the indie route by funding via Kickstarter campaign has set Remedy Drive free, in a way, from the constraints and expectations that would be imposed by major label.  It has allowed to them to create a striking concept album.  Though critics are divided about whether it takes the top spot amongst Remedy Drive’s work, they universally applaud Zach and company for their boldness and artistic vision in producing Commodity, an unexpected (if occasionally uneven) labor of love.

Key quotes:

“The moody, musical grit blended beautifully with Remedy Drive’s signature piano helps lend emotional weight to the mission. There is an undercurrent, something slightly foreign in the musical tone, that proves that the streets of Thailand left their mark on David Zach musically as well.”

Key quote:

“Commodity is a good record. There are moments here that are blasts of fresh air and spots of light in a landscape of darkness – particularly the good production and the above-average instrumentals. But it simply feels too safe to be a great record.”

Key quote:

“It’s a bold, out-of-the-box move for a Christian artist and proof that unbridled passion inspires powerful art. “

Key quote:

“Commodity is one of the best efforts that Remedy Drive has released to date and it’s not coincidence that that success comes alongside such a passionate mission. Harnessing their desire for change in the world has wrought some powerful changes to their music as well and the result is simply amazing.”
